January 2012 Newsletter
Happy New Year to all our members and a big thank you for all your continuing support. We received lots of tins of cat food and toys for the cats to play with, they were much appreciated. We had a bumper delivery from a gentleman called Nigel whose donation of cat food and sacks of litter were delivered by transit van. Nigel sadly lost his mum and his donation to us was in his mum’s memory. Thanks once again Nigel we were overwhelmed by your generosity.
CATS HOMED
Bridget, our young tortie female from Leyland, put on weight and her fur grew back, she turned into a very pretty cat. We had her spayed and she pulled her stitches out whilst still at the vets so they closed the wound with staples. She managed to remove these a few days later but luckily the wound had closed and a check up at the vets showed no problems. Bridget has gone to live in Whittle-le-Woods with Morgan and her parents. Bridget seemed to take to Morgan straight away and was quite happy to go to her new home.
Chutney, now has a new home in Ribbleton with Christine, who came with her family who we knew from being neighbours of someone in our family. It is a small world sometimes. Chutney, is such a friendly little chap he will soon
make himself at home.
Ashley and Sally, now have a new home in Lostock Hall, with a gentleman whose previous Lancashire Cat Rescue cat had sadly passed away. I am so glad they found a home together.
Winston, a lovely friendly ginger male cat, now has a home with a family in Bamber Bridge. He is such a gentle cat, he was a real star of the Coffee and Mince Pie Day.
Bingo, our black and white female cat now has a new home at the Lanquestrian Centre in Overton. This is the ideal home for Bingo as an outdoor cat with a large barn to sleep in as she has an aversion to litter trays. We are always looking for outdoor homes for cats and stables are ideal.
CATS NEEDING HOMES
Henry, is a large black cat found wandering around a car park in Accrington, he was obviously lost. He was not neutered and had no collar or microchip, we have had him neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He is a lovely cat very cool takes everything in his stride and loves his food and a cuddle.
Churchill, is a white and tabby male around seven months old, again he has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He is also very friendly and would love a home to call his own.
Two of Pickles kittens are still looking for homes and so is Tessa, the last of the Quarry kittens from Clayton- le-Woods.
CATS HELPED
The evening before the Flea Market, we got a phone call about a cat that had been sat under a bush in a garden in Penwortham for two days. We asked them to bring the cat to us so we could scan it for a microchip ,and it turned out to belong to a lady round the corner from them. The owner was overjoyed to get him back!! He had been missing for over two weeks, many thanks to Harry’s owner for the lovely Thank You card and generous donation. Also thanks to Karen and Neil for caring for Harry and getting in touch with us to say they had found a lost cat. Harry, was able to be reunited with his owner due to having a microchip implanted between his shoulder blades which when scanned shows a number. Petlog has a database which then matches the Identichip number with the owners name and address. This system of identifying your cat has been around for some time now but we still get cats either brought to us or we are told about them that have no means of identity, no collar and no microchip. It is so frustrating when the technology is there, it is also so rewarding to reunite a lost cat with its owner. We have been able to do this three times in the last six weeks.
Poppy, came to us heavily pregnant, and with her two sons from a previous litter, Winston, who we have already mentioned and Churchill, a white and tabby cat. Many thanks to Chris and Jenny, who looked after Poppy when she had her babies whilst Brian and I were on a weekend away. Many thanks also to Jenny, who took Catherine a black cat with kidney problems to the vets where unfortunately she had to be put to sleep.
Witty, a female tortie was trapped at Witton Park along with two of her kittens, Holly and Ivy, although a third kitten a ginger one proved harder to catch. Vicky, managed to catch him eventually and has offered him a home. Witty, has been spayed, and will be returned to the greenhouses on Witton Park once she has had her second vaccination. She is a feral cat that managed to escape out of her pen past me and hide behind the freezer in the shed. Brian managed to grab her and she sank her teeth into his hand so he had to make a trip to Chorley A & E for a course of antibiotics.
FUNDS RAISED
The November Flea Market at Barton Village Hall was not as well attended as usual but we still raised £1,040.00. Many thanks to everyone who came to help, we all had an enjoyable day. The Tombola did exceptionally well, mainly due to the wonderful prizes that had been donated, many bottles and lots of chocolates had people queuing up to have a go. Grateful thanks to Dawn and Jenny, who spent an evening making up baskets out of the donations of toiletries we had been given, they looked wonderful. Also thanks to Sylvia who spent an evening sticking tickets on prizes and also folding them up to put in the drum. The amount we made for the cats made it all worth while. I do appreciate the many ways our helpers contribute to our successful Flea Markets, from coming along to help on the day some of you bringing and storing items for the stalls to donating items to sell, also those of you who bake
cakes for the kitchen or donate eggs or cheese for the sandwiches. We make a great team and I appreciate everything you do.
The Longridge Lions Christmas Bazaar, was busier than it has been for a few years and we made £70.00. We sold a very nice rocking horse we had been given, thanks Pat and some expensive perfume which helped us reach that amount. Many thanks to Jenny for her help and company on the day and for agreeing to wear a Christmas hat. Jenny had her photo taken with a couple of other stall holders for the local paper, I had gone for some refreshments, I know when to disappear!!
The Coffee and Mince Pie Day, was a great success despite the torrential rain and raised £104.00, at least it did not snow!! Many thanks for all the donations of cat food, it will last for ages.
We were also lucky enough to be nominated for a donation of a £100.00 from the Yorkshire Bank.

ANGELA
Angela, was the person who persuaded me I could go it alone as Lancashire Cat Rescue all those years ago (1994), and was by my side at every fund – raising event we went to for many years. The Flea Markets at Barton Village Hall would not have happened without her as I took some persuading we could make it happen. Whenever I said I could not, she said “yes you can”, and she was right.
Angela took the bookings and ran the kitchen for a number of years until her ankle which she had badly broken many years ago meant she could not stand for long periods and reluctantly she handed over the apron.
Angela, continued to bake scones and tea bread for us to sell, as well as having a stall. A few years ago she became unwell and had to have an operation, it was a slow recovery but when she was able she came to Barton either as a stall holder or just to visit the many friends she had made there.
Around a year ago Angela was very ill with pneumonia and had to be in hospital for quite a while, at one point she was not expected home, but Angela was a fighter and home she came.
Last October she was in hospital again and although allowed home for a short while was rushed back in and sadly passed away on New Years Day. Lancashire Cat Rescue, has lost a founder member and Brian and I have lost a good friend. Our sympathies go to Sean and Liam her sons, she will be missed.
Best Wishes from Christine
